LeBron James Free Agency
Updated: Jul 22
As of right now, we all know that LeBron James has still yet to sign with a team. The 3 main teams being talked about are the Philadelphia 76ers, Golden State Warriors, and the Cleveland Cavaliers with the Minnesota Timberwolves on the outside looking in. My opinion on these teams is the similar to what you've been hearing about the top 3 teams on the list.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Let's start with the Timberwolves, I don't see this happening at all, but since their on the outside looking in let's talk about it. It would be an interesting and solid fit for a 41 going on 42 year old LeBron. They have Lamelo Ball who would be the primary ball handler and playmaker and Anthony Edwards who would still be the go to scorer for them. They also have players defense like Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert some LeBron won't have to strain too much on the defensive end. Ayo Dosunmo who brings a lot of scoring off the bench. LeBron would be able to play freely on both ends and not have to do too much. But like I said earlier, I don't see this one happening at all.
Now the Warriors, of all the teams, this one would be considered the most fun scenario. All of these players, LeBron, Draymond Green, Stephen Curry, and Jimmy Butler getting one last hoora together. I don't see this as a real chance of winning a championship, I see it more as just an opportunity for Curry and LeBron to team up together one time and try and do something. I believe it is still a playoff team with some of the pieces they have and added like Kristaps Porzingis who can spread the floor and also be a decent shot blocker. Curry would get a lot more open shots with a lot of focus having to now be on both curry and LeBron. Draymond is still going to do what he does defensively but his role would change a bit with LeBron being the main playmaker. Then you have a rookie in Yaxel Lendeborg whose 6'8, 240 whose athletic and can attack the paint, but can also step out and hit 3's. With all this being said, it would be a very fun team to watch, but I don't believe it would be a true championship contender.
The Cavs would be the best storybook ending, finishing it where it all started. The fit would definitely be interesting to say the least. They have the bigs and paint defense to still be an elite defense, they have sharpshooters in Sam Merrill and Max Strus with Jalon Tyson who is also a knockdown shooter. The Cavs also have an elite scorer in Donovan Mitchell who can score with the best of them, the only problem I see is I don't really see LeBron wanting to play with James Harden, it's really hard to see their play styles matching each others. But at the end of the day it is Cleveland and who wouldn't want that storybook ending to finish a great career off in.
Lastly, the 76ers, this is the team that I believe gives him the best chance to try and get 1 more championship. They have Tyrese Maxey and VJ edgecombe as the guards, one is one of the elite scorers in the NBA, the other is coming off of an impressive rookie year where he played well in the playoffs. Then we have to talk about Jaylen Brown who is coming off of an MVP caliber season where he averaged 29 points and took the Celtics who weren't even supposed to be close to the playoffs to the playoffs as a 2 seed. Then we all know what Embiid is capable of when healthy, he's one of the most elite big men of all time, and one of the most skilled. The only position that the 76ers are missing is a power forward where LeBron comes into play, it's the perfect fit. James gives them a power forward who can facilitate and get guys going, he can get the ball to everyone where they need it and get guys easy buckets. Barring any injuries, this is a championship caliber team, but that's the problem, can Embiid stay healthy for at least one season to see this run through, if so, and LeBron chooses the 76ers, this team could end up hoisting the trophy at the end of the year.
